In a seminar organized through the collaboration of Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University Faculty of Pharmacy and the Tokat Chamber of Pharmacists, radiopharmacy and radioactive decontamination processes during disasters were thoroughly discussed.

Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University Faculty of Pharmacy has added another milestone to its academic activities, aiming to maintain professional currency and prepare students for potential future scenarios. The seminar, titled "Radiation Protection in Disaster Situations and Radioactive Decontamination and Waste Management in Hospitals," was held with the participation of esteemed experts in the field.

Critical Presentations from Expert Speakers

During the seminar, radiopharmacy and disaster management topics were addressed in detail from both strategic and scientific perspectives. The distinguished speakers and their presentation titles were as follows:

  • Prof. Dr. Yekta ÖZER (İstinye University): "Disasters and Radiopharmaceuticals" – focusing on the critical importance of drug management and radiopharmaceuticals during disaster events.

  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mine SİLİNDİR GÜNAY (Hacettepe University): "Management of Radioactive Waste in Hospitals During Disaster Situations" – sharing vital details regarding decontamination processes and waste management within hospital environments.

One of our invited speakers, Prof. Dr. Asuman Yekta Özer, is among the most respected figures in Turkey, known for her academic expertise and literature-defining work in Radiopharmacy—one of the most specific and strategic fields of pharmaceutical sciences. Having led the development of the Department of Radiopharmacy at Hacettepe University Faculty of Pharmacy for many years and currently continuing her academic career at İstinye University, Prof. Özer has spearheaded numerous international scientific projects on the design, quality control, and safe use of radioactive drugs used in nuclear medicine. She possesses deep expertise in critical public health issues, such as the safe management of radioactive materials and the coordination of pharmaceutical services during radiological disasters. As a visionary leader in setting the standards for radiopharmacy education in Turkey and training competent pharmacists, she provided our academic staff and students with a comprehensive perspective on radiopharmaceutical management in disasters.

Our other distinguished guest, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mine Silindir Günay, continues her academic work as a faculty member in the Department of Radiopharmacy at Hacettepe University and stands out as one of the most productive representatives of the new generation in radiopharmaceutical sciences. Focusing particularly on targeted radiopharmaceutical systems, the combination of nanotechnological carrier systems with radiopharmaceuticals, and imaging agents, Assoc. Prof. Silindir Günay has authored numerous national and international scientific publications. Recipient of several prestigious awards for her academic contributions, she also possesses extensive technical knowledge in application-oriented subjects such as radioactive waste management and decontamination processes in hospital settings. Her strategic approaches to enhancing the operational safety of hospitals during disasters provided our participants with critical insights into the importance of nuclear pharmacy applications in the field.

"Future Pharmacists Ready for Every Scenario"

The event, which saw high attendance from our academic staff, members of the Tokat Chamber of Pharmacists, and our students, emphasized the role of staying updated with scientific developments in achieving professional excellence. At the conclusion of the organization, gratitude was expressed to our guest speakers for sharing their knowledge, to the Tokat Chamber of Pharmacists for their support, and to all stakeholders involved in the organization.

As the Faculty of Pharmacy, we will continue our scientific and academic activities without interruption to ensure our students graduate as highly equipped and well-rounded professionals.
